Jim Lawson recommends the Philadelphia Museum of Art's Photography Portfolio Competition. Deadline: May 15, 2010.
Danny's Notes from January 21 Meeting.
If you can fill in some blanks, or add something, please send Danny an email.
Featured photographer: Lisa Tyson Ennis, who has been photographing the fishing industry of Newfoundland. It is quickly changing and, in places, dying. Lisa's style is iconic, each photo standing on its own. This project is something new for her: photo-journalistic, a kind of reporting, a series of images with a unifying narrative. Where will this tension lead? She recommends Eddie Ephraums' book, Creative Elements and the work of Michael Kenna.
Others who showed work: Elizabeth Bard, distorted panoramic Italian cityscapes for a group exhibit, "Warped"; Jim Mott, experiments with cyanotypes and Van Dyke Brown emulsion using digital negatives printed on Pictorico OHP (OverHead Projector) transparency substrate; John Foltz, abstract details of a sculture (whose?) at Delaware Art Museum; Erik Kissa, night-blooming lilies at Longwood Gardens, some with colors revised; Jeff Steen, two very abstract prints(!) of clothes hangers and cracked river ice; Harold Ross, two large photographs, of trees and a primitive steam locomotive, painted with light; and Chad Fahs, urban scenes of foreign countries shot with slide film processed as negative film ("cross processed").
On-Line Book Publishing: Kerry Harrison says MyPublisher.com is 50x better than Shutterfly. Tom Davis likes Shutterfly for calendars and cards.
On-Line Slide Shows: Jim Graham and Tom Davis recommend SoundSlides software.
Greeting Card stock: print photo on one side, text on the other. John Foltz recommends Red River Paper.
Easy, inexpensive website: John Foltz says PhotoShelter.com is $100/year with many templates.
Harold Ross recommends the Surefire E1L (one battery, LED) outdoorsman flashlight. Expensive, but it will last a lifetime, and the batteries have a ten-year shelf life. The best price can be found at Targetmaster in Chadds Ford. They seem to beat any Internet price by 20-30 bucks!
Edward Weston Retrospective: at James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown. PA through March 28.
AIPAD Photography Show: at Park Avenue Armory in New York City, March 18-21.
Philadelphia Photo Arts Center. Gerry Meekins recommends their programs.
Famous Asian Actresses Imagine Their Own Murder: Chad Fahs has been videotaping the Japanese photographer Izima Kaoru.
Clark Little photographs the inside of waves. "Fabulous" says Bill Pepper.
Beth Trepper featured in Wilmington News Journal on January 14, 2010.
Jim Jones recommends local Calvary Community Series Photo Contest. Deadline: Feb. 7.
Remote Fishing Village Abandoned. Danny Schweers recommends the 1937 movie "The Edge of the World" about a fishing village on a Scottish island that cannot sustain itself.
Beth Trepper recommends "Man of Aran", Robert Flaherty's stunning 1934 film about the fishermen on the rugged Aran Islands off the coast of Ireland and their incredibly brutal fight for survival against insurmountable odds. The DVD also features a 60-minute documentary of the 2 years of hardship in making the film (such as processing the film in an abandoned shack with no running water!) Both "The Edge of the World" and "Man of Aran" are similar and excellent films giving insight into the harsh lives of fishermen. Lisa's work will continue to document this way of life, and I'm so glad she is lending her amazing talent to such an interesting subject.
Toning: Harold Ross recommends leaving your laptop computer in the bleach bath no more than ten seconds.
Next Meeting: Thursday, February 18, 6:30 p.m. (time?) at Carson Zullinger's home (not his studio).

The Brandywine Photo Collective
We are a loose-knit band of photographers intent on learning to see better and, through the medium of photography, to share that vision.
Many of us are professionals who still have enthusiasm for the medium outside of our commercial work. All of us look to one another for inspiration, education, fellowship and fun.
We are active in the vicinity of the Brandywine, called a river in Pennsylvania and a creek after it crosses the state line into Delaware. This area is known for its lovely landscape and its painters. The Brandywine may never be known for its photographers but that doesn't stop us from borrowing the name.
