January, 2010
- Jim Lawson recommends the Philadelphia Museum of Art's Photography Portfolio Competition. Deadline: May 15, 2010.
- Lisa Tyson Ennis recommends Eddie Ephraums' book, Creative Elements and the work of Michael Kenna.
- Jim Mott recommends Van Dyke Brown emulsion using digital negatives printed on Pictorico OHP (OverHead Projector) transparency substrate.
- Chad Fahs recommends slide film processed as negative film ("cross processed").
- On-Line Book Publishing: Kerry Harrison says MyPublisher.com is 50x better than Shutterfly. Tom Davis likes Shutterfly for calendars and cards.
- On-Line Slide Shows: Jim Graham and Tom Davis recommend SoundSlides software.
- Greeting Card stock: print photo on one side, text on the other. John Foltz recommends Red River Paper.
- Easy, inexpensive website: John Foltz says PhotoShelter.com is $100/year with many templates.
- Harold Ross recommends the Surefire E1L (one battery, LED) outdoorsman flashlight. Expensive, but it will last a lifetime, and the batteries have a ten-year shelf life. The best price can be found at Targetmaster in Chadds Ford. They seem to beat any Internet price by 20-30 bucks!
- Edward Weston Retrospective: at James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown. PA through March 28.
- AIPAD Photography Show: at Park Avenue Armory in New York City, March 18-21.
- Philadelphia Photo Arts Center. Gerry Meekins recommends their programs.
- Famous Asian Actresses Imagine Their Own Murder: Chad Fahs has been videotaping the Japanese photographer Izima Kaoru.
- Clark Little photographs the inside of waves. "Fabulous" says Bill Pepper.
- Beth Trepper featured in Wilmington News Journal on January 14, 2010.
- Jim Jones recommends local Calvary Community Series Photo Contest. Deadline: Feb. 7.
- Remote Fishing Village Abandoned. Danny Schweers recommends the 1937 movie "The Edge of the World" about a fishing village on a Scottish island that cannot sustain itself.
- Beth Trepper recommends "Man of Aran", Robert Flaherty's stunning 1934 film about the fishermen on the rugged Aran Islands off the coast of Ireland and their incredibly brutal fight for survival against insurmountable odds. The DVD also features a 60-minute documentary of the 2 years of hardship in making the film (such as processing the film in an abandoned shack with no running water!) Both "The Edge of the World" and "Man of Aran" are similar and excellent films giving insight into the harsh lives of fishermen. Lisa's work will continue to document this way of life, and I'm so glad she is lending her amazing talent to such an interesting subject.
