Kathy's Photo Notes

Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, held at Bill Lindsey’s house

In attendance: Danny Schweers, Carson Zullinger, Beth Harpham, Liz Bard, Beth Trepper, Tom Davidson, Jon Foltz, Kathe Morse, Lisa Tyson Ennis, Gordon Hesse, Jeffrey Steen, Peter Kaplan, Kerry Harrison, Bill Lindsey, Bill Pepper, Mickey Freed, and Kathy Buckalew.

Bill Lindsey was getting ready to show his work at the Winterthur Garden Fair, which were several framed panoramic landscapes, all quite beautiful. Bill showed us his technique for doing panoramics with his digital camera, the bracket device he made to hold his camera on the tripod to keep the horizon at the same point in each frame, and how to do the photo merge in Photoshop. He said you can Google “panoramic software”, and it doesn’t cost much.
He shoots from one point and swivels the camera; Liz Bard also does panoramics, but she will sometimes move down the whole scene and shoot straight on, instead of swiveling the camera from a fixed center point.

Showing work in addition to Bill:
Liz Bard—also some panoramics, some abstracts of peeling walls, Tuscany and Greece. Gorgeous panoramic photos of the life span of a flower, showing the entire flower, from bud, through full bloom, to decay. Nice idea.
Carson Zullinger—some new figurative work in water. He had an opening at the October Art Loop (sorry, I’m just writing these notes a few weeks after the meeting, but he sent out invitations. It’s still up, at Gallery 919, if you haven’t seen it. It’s well worth the trip to town. Large landscapes, really takes your breath away)
Beth Trepper—beautiful, lush portraits, fashion, in Bahamas and Ireland
Mickey Freed—one very large print, of brambles, old steps. Did his shifting of hues on sky and ground. Will bring in his laptop to show us how he does his layers and hue/saturation changes.

Much ohing and aahing all around. And Bill made lasagna, with salad and bread for all of us. What a nice surprise! Thanks, Bill (and his wife, Rosemary).

Other news (since the meeting):

Beth Trepper and Kathy Buckalew are in a group show of the National League of American Pen Women, Diamond State Branch, at Grace Church. Beth won first place and Kathy won second place with her color portrait of “Viola Serenades the Emus.”

Kathy Buckalew was filmed for WHYY-TV, channel 12, about her farmers project. Not sure when it will be aired, but there is a tentative date of Wed., Oct. 23, probably around 5, 5:30 or so. It’s part of a series of shorts, called “Experience Delaware.” As soon as I know the date for sure, I will send out an e-mail to everyone. If you don’t get a chance to see it on TV, it will be on their website for a week after it airs. I will include that info when I send out the show date.

Kathy will also be part of a panel discussion at the Delaware Art Museum on Friday, Oct. 24, 2008, sponsored by the Delaware Humanities Forum, called “Inside and Outside the Frame: Picturing Delaware.” The other panelists are Michael Biggs and Kevin Fleming, moderated by Lise Monty. Fred Comegys was supposed to be on it as well, but I didn’t see his name on the last press release I saw. So not sure what happened, or if he will be there. And we get to do a 20-30 minute presentation of our work, which I am madly working on! In the morning, it will be the humanities folks giving talks. It’s all part of the DHF’s 30th anniversary. Call DAM if you are interested in any of it. There is also a reception on Thursday night, and something else on Friday night.

Also, don’t forget Photo Expo is at the end of October, Thurs. through Sat., Oct. 23, 24 and 25. I’m probably going up on Thursday and Saturday both, taking the train, or driving with someone, or driving and training, or some combination. I was going to go up for all three days, but forgot about this talk for DHF that I’m doing.

Guess that’s it. The next meeting will be at Beth Harphams’ house, on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008, at 6:30pm. Directions will be sent to everyone by e-mail.

Kathy
