Brandywine Photo Collective
at Lisa Tyson Ennis's studio in Chadds Ford.

Featured photographer: Lisa Tyson Ennis, who has been photographing the fishing industry of Newfoundland. It is quickly changing and, in places, dying. Lisa's style is iconic, each photo standing on its own. This project is something new for her: photo-journalistic, a kind of reporting, a series of images with a unifying narrative. Where will this tension lead? She recommends Eddie Ephraums' book, Creative Elements and the work of Michael Kenna.
Others who showed work: Elizabeth Bard, distorted panoramic Italian cityscapes for a group exhibit, "Warped"; Jim Mott, experiments with cyanotypes and Van Dyke Brown emulsion using digital negatives printed on Pictorico OHP (OverHead Projector) transparency substrate; John Foltz, abstract details of a sculture (whose?) at Delaware Art Museum; Erik Kissa, night-blooming lilies at Longwood Gardens, some with colors revised; Jeff Steen, two very abstract prints(!) of clothes hangers and cracked river ice; Harold Ross, two large photographs, of trees and a primitive steam locomotive, painted with light; and Chad Fahs, urban scenes of foreign countries shot with slide film processed as negative film ("cross processed").

Harold Ross recommends the Surefire E1L (one battery, LED) outdoorsman flashlight. Expensive, but it will last a lifetime, and the batteries have a ten-year shelf life. The best price can be found at Targetmaster in Chadds Ford. They seem to beat any Internet price by 20-30 bucks!

Remote Fishing Village Abandoned. Danny Schweers recommends the 1937 movie "The Edge of the World" about a fishing village on a Scottish island that cannot sustain itself.
Beth Trepper recommends "Man of Aran", Robert Flaherty's stunning 1934 film about the fishermen on the rugged Aran Islands off the coast of Ireland and their incredibly brutal fight for survival against insurmountable odds. The DVD also features a 60-minute documentary of the 2 years of hardship in making the film (such as processing the film in an abandoned shack with no running water!) Both "The Edge of the World" and "Man of Aran" are similar and excellent films giving insight into the harsh lives of fishermen. Lisa's work will continue to document this way of life, and I'm so glad she is lending her amazing talent to such an interesting subject.
