Brandywine Photo Collective

Kathy's Notes

of March, 2007

Hello, phellow photogs:
I didn't take a whole lot of notes at our last meeting, on March 15. But I'll fill you in with what little I do have.

in attendance:

me, Carson Zullinger, David McClintock, Danny Schweers, Jeffrey Steen, DeVere Patton, Mickey Freed, Beth Trepper, Jim Graham, and Jim Jones.

set-up for this group, and voted on some things:

  • membership dues of $35./year. Carson will be handling this, and will let us know when he is ready to accept everyone's checks. He will open a checking account for the Brandywine Photo Collective, and is in the process of getting a federal ID #. But please wait until he tells us before you send checks!
  • membership in the group will be by paying dues.
  • decided against any number of mandatory meetings in a year's time, at least for now.
  • voting privileges only for those who attend meetings. If you have strong feelings about a particular issue, either get to the meeting, or get your thoughts to someone who will be there, and your concerns will be taken under consideration. In light of this, not everyone responded with their thoughts as to how the group should be structured, or even indicated what their concerns were.
  • thought we would try for a while having just a few people show work at each meeting, under a pre-determined theme. This way, we could get more deeply into a discussion of a particular topic, or body of work, instead of just having a little bit of time for numerous photos. Everyone seemed to want more discussion, more constructive critiquing (how do you spell that?!) of work, going into the photo and the photographers thoughts more deeply. Next meeting will be on portraiture, and Beth Trepper, Jim Jones, and myself (Kathy Buckalew) showing work. We will decide on a theme in April for the next meeting and who will bring work. We'll try this and see how it works.
  • we're moving the meeting time back, to 7:00-9:00 p.m. We will do our best to get the business end of things done before we look at work, but if people are late, that makes it difficult to get everything done that we would like to do. We all, I think, want more time to look at, and discuss, photographs.
  • I think we will be posting my notes on the website, rather than sending e-mails to everyone. We talked about the number of e-mails flying around, and are asking everyone to use some care. If someone asks a specific question, and you want to respond to that question, please just send your answer to that person, rather than the entire group. I would like the e-mail list to still be available if we want to notify each other of upcoming shows, or photo events. And again, a reminder, not to use the e-mail list for anything other than photo-related stuff.

The Secret Life of Water in October

Those at the meeting voted on a title for the water show in October: "The Secret Life of Water". Not too glitzy, still simple, still has "water" in the title, but maybe a little more intriguing.

Non-Profit Status:

Still talking about getting a 501c3 for this group, and whether we even need, or want, one or not. To be continued.

The AIPAD show is coming up in less than two weeks.

This is the Association of International Photography Art Dealers show, in New York City. It is held at the Park Avenue Armory, at 67th St. & Park Ave. It is from Thursday, April 12-Sunday, April 15. It is this enormous space full of all the different photo art galleries from all over.  You get to go and just see everything imaginable. It gives you ideas of who is showing what kind of work, and where yours just might fit in. Or you just get to see lots and lots of photography.

I went several years ago, and it was a blast! I want to go again, but can't go up on Sat. April 14. I could go any of the other days. It is only $20. for the day to get in, and you get an illustrated 360 page catalogue of all the galleries that are showing there. Wear really good walking shoes, because you walk a lot, and it is exhausting. But a lot of fun! Who wants to go?!

Exhibits:

See the Calendar page of this website current exhibits of members' work and one recommended exhibit in Baltimore.

Next meeting:

Thursday, April 19, 2007, 7:00-9:00 p.m., at the Delaware Art Museum.  (It's working out to be the 3rd Thursday of the month, if that makes it any easier for folks to remember.) Discussion will be on portraits, with Beth Trepper, Jim Jones, and Kathy Buckalew (me) showing work.

That's it.

Thanks, everybody, see y'all soon. Happy shooting!!
