Kathy's Notesof April, 2007 Hello, photographers: Some quick notes from the last meeting, which was on Thursday, April 19: Carson will have the tax ID number in a few months. He will then set up a checking account, and take our money for the group. He has listed himself as treasurer of the organization, with his home address as the organization's address. (They need something!) We also need to have this tax ID number if we are to become a 501c3 -- which Carson strongly recommends, and many of us agree. The Delaware Art Museum wants to have a community gallery, which is still in progress. Carson thinks that they would be interested in talking to us about a show there. We can make a proposal to them—but most likely, not any time soon. Some of us have been asked to submit work for an exhibit, "The Cultivated Eye: Brandywine Valley Photographers." See our calendar for details. Peter told us about the problems he’s been having with the photography work he did for a client: Valero. He had been hired to do photography of their plant, and, long after he had done the work, they tried to say that it was work for hire, which is entirely different than being contracted to do photography for them. What I do at Hagley, as the staff photographer, is work for hire—they own all I produce. But Peter owns what he did for Valero. Lots of time and hassle and lawyers later, he did get paid, and all his work back. Valero didn't want it if they didn't own it outright. Peter was going to do a small presentation on copyright for us at the next meeting. But I just received an e-mail from him, saying that he wouldn’t be able to do it, has to be somewhere else that night. He will be willing to do it another time. Last meeting was the first time that we were trying out a different way of showing photographs. We came up with a particular topic and asked a few different people to bring photos. Beth Trepper and I showed some portrait work (Jim Jones was to join us, but couldn’t make it at the last minute). Beth showed 4 prints, all of couples, and asked people to say what they thought the relationship was in each of the photos. We talked a lot about perceptions, how we each see things differently, and then Beth told us what was really going on in each of the photos—very different from we all saw! I also showed a bunch of portraits, from a couple of different projects, my women in community and my women artists. Didn’t bring any of the farmers, figured people had seen them most recently. We had talked at the meeting before last about bringing whatever photos we were thinking about for WATER. It’s not a strict jurying kind of thing, just bring in whatever you were thinking about showing. I guess we should decide at the next meeting if we are going to meet over the summer or not. We need to meet more at some point, because we have to get stuff done (postcards, mailing, publicity, etc.) for the show in October. We’ll discuss that, too. OK, guess that’s it. Don’t have any news of shows for folks. If anyone is doing anything, please get it posted on our website, so we can all go.
