Kathy's Photo Notes

of June, 2007

Saturday, June 23, 2007, at Stephanie Kirk’s house, were: Stephanie Kirk, Danny Schweers, David McClintock, me (Kathy), Sarah Barr, Jeffrey Steen, Randy Ciurlino, Bill Pepper, and a new person, Colin Lalock, a friend of Jeffrey’s.

UCAL Show in October

Most of the business part of the meeting centered around the up-coming show at University City Arts League (UCAL), in October. [You can find details of this show in Kathy's notes for September.]

POSTCARDS: The graphics person at UCAL has designed the postcard, using one photo each by Lisa Tyson Ennis and Danny Schweers. It looks very good. (The above image is similar to the postcard.) Cards are 27 cents each. Please let Sarah Barr know how many you would like. UCAL has their own mailing list and will be sending out cards. We can each send out whatever we want. The cards will be printed by Modern Postcard. I don’t have a date when Sarah needs numbers, but you should get it to her right away, so she has it. Each of us should put the postcard on our individual web-sites.

POSTERS: Danny will design a poster, based on the postcard, which he will have on our web-site. We can each download it and print it, and post wherever we think is a good place. Several people volunteered where they would post it. Here’s the list, just so we don’t get multiple copies in one place:

  • Jeffrey: will blanket North Wilmington, such as Cameras, Etc., Brew-Ha-Ha, Einsteins, Borders, B&N, etc.
  • Randy: Cameras, Etc, Newark, Biggs Museum, Cecil County Arts Council, DCAD
  • Sarah: will post along Main Line colleges and will check with UCAL about them posting notices around campus
  • Stephanie will take care of West Chester postings
  • I will check with UD’s photography dept. about posting notices there
  • Wanted to know if Barbara Proud could take care of putting up a poster or two where she teaches (I think it’s University of the Arts?)
  • Carson, is there a place at the Delaware Art Museum? Could you put one up at DCCA?
  • Beth Harpham, could you put stuff in Unionville?
  • Anybody have other ideas of where to advertise?

STATEMENT: We would like to have a general artists’ statement at the show. What we did for the “WHITE” show a few years back was that each of the photographers sent me a brief statement about what the subject WHITE meant to them, or what they had photographed, or whatever. I wrote it up into a statement that we posted at the show. We would like to do the same for this show. So please send me some of your thoughts on water, the secret life of water, what water means to you, what you were going for in your photographs of water, anything you can think of. I will put it into some kind of cohesive form, add info about our group, have Danny look it over and add and edit, and that will be our statement for the show. I will make sure to put a name with each statement, so viewers can then look at that person’s work.
We’d also like to have a binder at the show, with pages filled with everyone’s info, CV’s if there is enough room, notices about shows, etc. I don’t know about you, but I like going through those books when I go to exhibits, I like seeing what else the artist has done, where they’ve been, etc. So start gathering what materials you like to have in there. We didn’t decide who will take care of that, but just wanted to give you all a head’s up to start getting it ready. We’ll try and have a table set up in the room somewhere for that to be left out, along with photographers’ cards, brochures, etc.
Do we want to put out a list of everyone’s web-sites and contact info, that people can take with them? That would be easy enough to do, just a one-page list. We can talk about this later.

PR KIT: Sarah is putting together a press kit, to have ready to send out at a moment’s notice to publications that might be interested in writing something about us and the show. Please send in some images to Sarah of what you might be exhibiting. And if I get statements about WATER soon enough, we can include that in the press kits, along with the images.

Also, send in whatever media contacts each of you have, places where you’ve sent notices of your own shows, people who have written about your work, etc. We’d like to start creating our own media list, so it will be ready for future shows. And we’d like to have some contacts to send items to for this exhibit.

PHOTOGRAPHERS IN SHOW: We need to know for sure who is in the show, and who is not. Please get that info to Sarah right away. I believe that all the names of those showing will be on the back of the postcard (but am not totally sure, so will check on that), so we need that information. And we need it in whatever info we send out. Here’s who we know is in the show so far: Jim Jones, Kitty Jones, Beth Trepper, Danny Schweers, Stephanie Kirk, Sarah Barr, Lisa Tyson Ennis, me, Randy Ciulino, Jeffrey Steen, David McClintock, Bill Pepper. That’s 12. Everyone else, just let us know for sure, and how your name should be printed.

OTHER BUSINESS

Randy asked about bringing some of his photo students to one of the meetings. Everyone thought that would be fine. We’re only talking about 6 or so, not hordes!

Carson has the federal tax ID number, but can’t open a checking account if he doesn’t have checks to put in it! So please send checks for $35.00 to: Carson Zullinger, 5 Penny Lane Court, Wilm. DE 19803.

David said we should have the 501c3 in about a week.

The Center for Emerging Visual Arts, at Rittenhouse Square in Philly, has a call out for a curator for a show with an anniversary theme. It’s their 25th anniversary. They would need a statement for a proposed show, a list of artists, and images from at least 2 of the artists—by August 1!. We thought it was way too quick to get something done, but wanted to let you all know that it had come up. But this might be a place we contact at some future date, and find out what their procedures are for putting up a show.

Someone mentioned sending in a proposal to the Print Center, also in Philly. Some or all of us may have to be members in order to do that. Something to talk about in the future.

The photo exhibit at the Delaware Art Museum, “Deceits and Fantasies” is up through October, as is the show that a few of us are in, “The Cultivated Eye”.

We talked about the possibility of maybe meeting every third time on a weekend, just to mix it up a bit, and give people a chance to make some of the meetings who might have a problem on week nights. We are planning to continue meeting at the Delaware Art Museum. It works out to be the third Thursday of each month. The next meeting is: Thursday, July 19, 7-9 pm., at DAM. If that changes, I will contact everyone. So, July and August at the Delaware Art Museum. September at Sarah Barr’s house, where we will bring all our work for the show, and tie up any loose ends. October at DAM. Don’t worry, I’ll y’all informed!

Finally, we got to the fun part: looking at photographs!

  • Bill Pepper had several new prints: some extreme macro shots of a dragonfly (with accompanying funny story of him chasing it around his sun-room, trying to get some good shots of it), and a bee; a terrific one of the back of a peacock with feathers spread, a view you don’t normally see. We all played a lot with cropping it different ways.
Jeffrey had some beautiful B&W’s of his son.
  • David brought in a photo that someone has commissioned, of a woman floating in a pool (no, she’s not dead, just floating on a raft!)
  • Randy showed some of his intriguing long multiple prints, of water’s edge, and other things. You’ll have to talk to him about how he does it, shooting with a Holga and only partially advancing the film, but continuing to shoot, so he has one, long negative. They are beautiful. Randy came up with a term for the current craze of printing everything BIG: “art-flation”. We liked it.
  • I showed some 5x7 work prints of some recent portraits, including some of David.
  • Jeffrey showed small black-and-white prints, architecture and portraits. He hopes to make his photography pay for itself and is looking for ways to offset the high cost of photography.
  • Danny showed his work prints from the last two months in the form of a book.
