Kathy's Photo NotesNotes of December, 2007 In attendance: Carson Zullinger, Jim Graham, Mickey Freed, Danny Schweers, Beth Trepper, Jeffrey Steen, Ken Francis, and myself, Kathy Buckalew. GROUP SHOW AT COLOURWORKS, IN FEBRUARY, 2008:The title is: “Elements: the Alchemy of Form.” It came from Mickey, of course, he of the intriguing and literary titles for his work. We decided that we should all use black wood frames, just to have some continuity to the show. Jim Graham said that Hardcastles Gallery in Centerville has a good stock of black wood frames, if anyone is interested, at 20% off for artists. I know that a lot of people have their framing done by someone else, and maybe don’t use black wood frames. But we thought that in a small space like Colourworks, having some continuity to the show couldn’t hurt, and that maybe black wood frames would be somewhat common to many of us for frames. Sorry for the extra costs and inconvenience to anyone. All the pertinent info about the exhibit is on the web-site, and has been mailed to the members on the mailing list, just to be sure that everyone knows what is going on! We do NOT have a juror for this show. Yes, yes, I know, we have all said that we want one for every show, but we didn’t have time to find someone, and no one stepped up to take care of it. Hopefully, that is something we can change in the coming year. Carson said he will take care of creating a postcard to be sent to Modern Postcard for printing, and we can each buy a supply from him when they are in. Mickey had an image he showed us, and we liked it for the invitation image. OTHER BUSINESS:We haven’t moved any further on creating a non-profit status for the group, so whoever has sent in a check to Carson as members’ dues, it has been destroyed. We have a tax ID number, which we will need to apply for a 501c3, but apparently we cannot simply open a checking account and put a bunch of checks in it. Go figure. We’ll let you all know when it is happening, and you can again shower us with checks. LOOKING AT WORK:Carson Zullinger told us about “Art Basel”, held in Miami, first weekend in December. It’s kinda like AIPAD (Association of International Photo Art Dealers), held in NYC earlier in the year, or PhotoLA, but it’s all kinds of art, not just photography. He said art was selling like crazy, in the $1,000’s! He made several mini-portfolios of his work to hand out, and has a gallery in Hamburg, Germany, and one in Napa Valley interested in his work. He said the photography he saw wasn’t any better than what we do here! Ken Francis showed us some of his “work” photos, from when he was a federal agent (DEA??). And had some great stories. Jim Graham has a solo exhibit coming up in February, the same time that we will be at Colourworks, showing at Hardcastle’s Gallery, up in Centerville. He brought lots of prints to show us, most of which will be in the show. They were mostly taken at three different workshops he’s attended in different parts of the country this year. He was talking about taking workshops, that he is a great believer in workshops because he gets to take a vacation in a great place, be around others who are doing the same thing, be in a positive atmosphere, and be able to just shoot, talk and look at photography. And if he gets something from the instructor, that’s a bonus. Some talk about different kinds of papers:
Beth Trepper’s show at Colourworks, “Connemara and Beyond”, will be up until the group show goes up. Please stop to see it if you haven’t yet. Her opening reception was a fun, long-into-the-evening affair, with lots of people, and her mother holding court. We are hoping her mother once again graces us with her presence and comes to our opening, since she seems to be the reason people come, not to see photographs! Maybe she’ll sing some Irish songs for us. Next meeting: NEW TIME, NEW LOCATION, NEW DATE: THURSDAY, JANUARY 24, 6:00-8:00 p.m., at Colourworks, 1902 Superfine Lane, Wilmington. If you need directions, please call 428-0981 or 428-0222.
